Onboarding
Neurosity’s headset onboarding process.
THE PROJECT
Neurosity’s headset, Notion, is the first productivity trainer for your brain. Notion knows when you are in the zone and keeps you there. I’ve worked with Neurosity’s Team to create a journey from when we ship the Notion headset out to users to when they’re able to use it after activating the device.

Current Journey
CHALLENGE
The step to scan the QR code on the headset doesn’t occur until later on in the process. Users might have already gone through the first few steps via computer. If this is so, scanning the QR code via webcam can become difficult.
Users need to feel rewarded when completing a step. An indication showing they’ve completed a step in the process encourages the users to keep going. Looking through a list of instructions can come off as complicated and can discourage users from setting it up - no matter how easy and welcoming the look & feel is.
Personas
discovery
QR codes are actually popular in other countries according to a study done by Scanova.io. Informed consumers need QR codes to retrieve more information about the product they want to purchase or try out for the first time. Consumers have adapted to QR codes more than ever after 2019. Marketers have found appealing ways to use QR codes by adding color or their logo to them. Companies have found safe and faster ways to pay with QR codes. Especially after the global pandemic in 2020 where restaurants, supermarkets, and other public spaces require customers to scan QR codes to learn about their new way of service.
“Real people don’t read manuals,” said Mortiz from an Open Social study. Good products help users attain goals. When you receive a new Ikea desk in the mail, it usually comes with a paper manual on how to build the desk. How many of you have found yourself wondering if you were even assembling it properly? It’s tough that there’s no one there by your side to confirm that you are. Since our product is used on a computer, let’s take advantage of it.
FIRST ITERATION
When users see a QR code it’s usually an indication to scan the code via camera app on a smartphone to access the link. It would be best to start the user off with the smart phone rather than a computer to make the following steps easier to follow.
I considered the idea of placing the QR code somewhere else on the package. Such as on the booklet, inside the hard cover case, or on the box. But most consumers, like myself, easily throw away papers and clutter we find unnecessary without reading why it’s important. At the end I decided to keep the QR code on the headset as pictured. The QR code notifies the user to click on the link at the top that goes through onboarding
On the first screen on the left, the first instruction is to activate the headset by turning it on. At the bottom of the screen there is a “next” button for when the user has successfully turned on the device. The second screen on the right is what happens when the user clicks “next.” The button gives a reaction by transitioning into a brighter color and a check mark appears rewarding the user on the first step to creating magical moments.
Next, the user is instructed to connect to wifi. Once the user has successfully connected to wifi the same “next” button is accessible for them to click on repeating the same check mark reward. Acknowledging that the user is consistently checking off each step excited the user. They’re getting closer and closer to using the Notion.
The “next” button takes the user to an account registration page. Once the user creates an account, it is automatically registered to the device the QR code was scanned from in the beginning of the process. This skips extra step from the current journey where the user would potentially scan the device uncomfortably from their desktop or manually type in a long ID.
key takeaways
Suggestion to add encouragements such as “Only a few steps closer to creating magical moments..” as a loading screen.
Add on vibrations or flashing lights on device to indicate that the steps are working as user sets up the device.
Make “Next'“ more visible while keeping the same color on buttons.
second iteration
I added a shadow to the text “Next” and made the color of the button a darker shade once the user clicks on it.
